Day Services

Support for learning, choice and community life

Prosper Fingal day services support adults with an intellectual disability to work towards personal goals, build relationships and take part in everyday community life.

What day support means

Your day should reflect what matters to you

Support is planned with each person. Activities are not the same for everyone. They should connect to the person’s interests, strengths, support needs and goals.

Day services are provided in line with the person-centred approach of HSE New Directions.

In simple words

A day service can help you learn, meet people, try activities and take part in your community.

You should have a say in what you do and what you want to work towards.

Your goals

Day support may include

The mix of support depends on the person and their agreed plan.

Learning and skills

Building practical, communication, digital, creative or personal skills at a suitable pace.

Relationships

Meeting people, keeping friendships and developing confidence in social situations.

Community participation

Using local places and services, joining groups and being part of community life.

Personal goals

Working towards goals that are meaningful to the person, including education, work or volunteering where appropriate.

Planning your support

Your personal plan guides the work

  • You are asked what is important to you.
  • Your strengths and support needs are considered.
  • You choose goals with the support you need to make decisions.
  • Actions are agreed and written down.
  • Your plan is reviewed with you.

Your key worker

A key worker may help you prepare for planning meetings, understand information and follow up on agreed actions.

You can say when something is not working or when you want a change.

Choice and communication

Information should work for you

Take your time

You can ask for more time to understand choices or make a decision.

Use the communication that suits you

This may include speech, pictures, signs, objects, technology or support from someone who knows you well.

Ask for support

You can involve an advocate, family member or trusted person when you want this.

Questions

Day service questions

Will I have to do the same activities as everyone else?

No. Support should be based on your personal plan. Some activities may be shared, but your goals and support needs are individual.

Can I change my goals?

Yes. Tell your key worker or another staff member. Your plan should be reviewed when your wishes, needs or circumstances change.
